  • Standard 7-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the causes and effects of world conflicts in the first half of the twentieth century.
  • 7-4.3: Explain the causes and effects of the worldwide depression that took place in the 1930s, including the effects of the economic crash of 1929.

Overview of The Great Depression


Activities and Computer Functions:
  • Students will watch a short video of Photos of the Great Depression
  • Students will complete a KWL chart
  • Students will create a PowerPoint presentation about the Great Depression
  • They will use the Internet to locate information

‍Materials Needed:

  • Pen/Pencil
  • Laptops
  • Internet Access
  • PowerPoint
  • SmartBoard

‍Problem:

Since our country recently went through a recession and subsequent economic downturn, I would like my students to have an understanding of how much worse the Great Depression was for the people of this country.
Activity-Imagine you and your partner are teachers and are teaching a lesson on The Great Depression.What are the causes and effects of The Great Depression? How can you include all information about The Great Depression and make your presentation visually appealing?

‍Research and Analysis:

The students will visit the following websites to gather information needed to create their PowerPoint.

‍Results Presentation:

The final product will be a multimedia presentation that answers the following questions:
  • What is an economic depression?
  • When did the Great Depression begin?
  • What were the causes and effects of Black Thursday, Black Tuesday, and the Great Depression?
  • What hardships did the Great Depression bring? What effects did the depression have on the people of the United States?
  • In what ways did FDR work to alleviate depression hardships?
  • What were the various programs that comprised the New Deal?
  • What was the Dust Bowl? When and where did it occur?
  • When did the era of the Great Depression end, and, what brought about its end?
  • Please cite all sources.

‍Planning Computer Activities:

With a partner create a PowerPoint

‍Before Computer Use:

  • With your partner, decide who will answer what questions.
  • With your partner, decide how you will collaborate to combine the information.
  • Plan PowerPoint presentation

‍During Computer Use:

  • Find pictures and photos of the Great Depression.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation making sure to answer all questions.

Since the Gifted and Talented students have the ability to think critically on their own, their assignment asks them to find the similarities and differences between the recession and the Great Depression. They will have to evaluate a significant amount of research to find this information.

‍After Computer Use:

  • Organize information and determine if any information is missing.
  • Review presentation and check for errors.

‍Supporting Activities:

  • Students can create a timeline of events from The Great Depression.

  • Did the students answer all the questions in their PowerPoint?
  • PowerPoint production
